How to Structure a New Baby Message

Start with a simple greeting. You have options here- write the card to the parents, to the whole family, or to the new baby.

The message itself- again, you have options. Generally, a message of congratulations is appropriate here if the card is going to the parents or the family. This is where the messages and quotes below come in. Pick 1-3 new baby messages from the examples below and combine them so they make a nice sounding message.

If the card is for the new baby, then a Welcome to the World sort of message is a good choice, followed by a compliment about their choice of parents. Eg. "Welcome to the World, baby Amelia/Connor/Bob. Congratulations on choosing the most wonderful parents. We can't wait to meet you."

Sign off with well wishes and your name/s.

Dos and Don'ts for writing in a new baby card

Do address both parents if applicable

Don't just address the card to the mother if the father is present

Do say nice things. Tell them they are going to be great parents, that they made a beautiful child. You know the drill.

Don't offer advice about parenting. This is their moment, so keep the focus on them rather than offering advice.

Do offer to babysit, only if you want to, of course. It's not mandatory.

Don't talk about touchy subjects like future children or ask for gory details about the birth
