Engagement Card Etiquette- Out Top Dos and Don'ts

Don't assume you're definitely invited to the wedding. You know, just in case. That would be mightily awkward if you expect an invitation and they have other ideas.

Do tell them you're happy for them. Say nice things, They'll like that.

Don't mention ex-partners. "I like this one, she's so much better than Tammy/Sarah/Bob." Just don't do it. It's not funny. Your comment will be as popular as a fart in a lift.

Don't make pregnancy jokes.

Do get them a personalised card. Did we mention we make some pretty nice ones? (Shameless plug, I know. But a girl's got to eat.)

Don't feel obligated to get an engagement gift. A card is absolutely fine. Save the gift stress for the wedding. Plus, if you get them a unique engagement card that they'll want to frame, then your card doubles up as a gift. Job done. Mic drop. Boom. *Insert smug face*

Do share a cute memory or story about the happy couple/ bride or groom. That'll make them smile. EG. "Remember when we used to play pretend weddings and you thought you'd marry Jason Donovan? This is like that but so much better."

Don't make mother-in-law jokes. They may show it to the mother-in-law. It's a risky game. Unless you ARE the future mother-in-law. In which case, joke away, that's fine.

How to Structure your Message:

1- Start with a greeting. Eg. "Dear name and name", "To the both of you", "To the future Mr and Mrs", or for a much more informal tone, try "You Guys!"

2- Congratulate them on their engagement. Feel free to jazz it up a bit here with a lovely quote, story, funny message or a comment about how happy you are for the couple (see below for examples to pinch, ahem, we mean, get inspired by, of course...)

3- Close your message with well wishes and sign off with your name/.s. Eg. "Loads of love, from name/s" or similar.

And Finally...
