Mother's Day is a day reserved for Mum. It's her chance to kick back, relax and have a day off. But what is she's the one who always comes up with the ideas for what to do each day? Mother's Day should be a day of treats for mum, and that goes beyond just a gift and card (although they are a great place to start).
Fill Mother's Day with her favourite activities and fun things to do, because it's a great way to show her how appreciated and loved she is, while also making lovely memories, and possibly even starting a new family tradition (you never know!)
I've gathered a list of some of my favourite ideas for things to do on Mothering Sunday, whether the kids are still little or not so little.
Unique Mother's Day Activities - Kid Friendly
1- Build a Massive Blanket Fort
We're talking structural. Use rope and every blanket and sheet you have at your disposal. It's got to be big enough for you all to fit inside. Make a throne inside for mum so she is Queen of the Fort - this could be a beanbag or cushion throne. Once you've built your fort, it's time to snuggle up inside with mum's favourite snacks and a movie (should've said- build the fort in the living room and make sure the TV is inside, if this isn't possible, watch the movie on a laptop)

2- Go on a Treasure Hunt
Go for a walk at Mum's favourite spot and make it a treasure hunt. See who can be the first to collect leaves in every colour of the rainbow, or who can spot the most pink things.
3- Make a Time Capsule for a Future Mother's Day
I love this idea. Get a nice-sized box (maybe a shoebox or wooden box), decorate it with doodles, paint, collage- whatever you like. Fill it with things for Mum in the future- maybe 10 years from now. Take photos of you all today to print and put in there (Polaroids are perfect). Get the kids to do drawings and write letters for Mum to open in 10 years and write predictions for where you'll all be and what you'll all be up to. Add anything else that future-mum would appreciate and pop it away with "Do not open until Mother's Day [YYYY]".

4- Open a 'Home Spa'
Pamper Mum with a home spa day and treat her like the queen she is. We're talking face masks, foot rubs, spa music, cucumber for the eyes and a big jug of fancy fruit water. Let the kids be her waiters and spa employees- you could even make them little name badges.

5- Do a Cocktail Mixing Class
Learn to mix a fancy cocktail together, no explanation needed, really! Quality time together- check. Fun activity- check. Cocktails - check. What's not to love?!
6- Go for a Family Spa Day
One of my favourite Mother's Days was when it fell on the same day as my daughter's birthday and we went to a spa as a family. It was the most lovely day, hanging out with my favourite peeps, getting a facial and a posh lunch- yes, please!
7- Try a New Skill
Try a new skill with a taster session or workshop- you could try wreath making, cooking, screen printing, dancing or anything else that Mum will love.

8- Go Old-School at the Roller Disco
I'm sorry, but I will take a Mother's Day at the roller rink with dirty fries and the arcade over a Sunday carvery any time.
9- Hire a Vintage Car
If you've got a bigger budget, this is a really fun day out. Hire a vintage car and plan a day trip somewhere cool- maybe a day trip to the beach or a picnic at her favourite spot. If you're feeling extra sneaky, you could also keep the destination a secret until you get there.

10- Re-Create a Favourite Family Photo
Have you ever seen those posts on social media where people go and re-create a childhood photo? This is such a fun idea for Mother's Day! Choose a favourite photo to re-create, gather the people in the original image, dress as closely as possible and visit the place it was taken. We do this in my friendship group whenever we are all together in our favourite spot. We've managed 3 photos so far in about 10 years and it's always hilarious.
Summing Up
Mother's Day doesn't need to be your bog-standard flowers, breakfast in bed and Sunday roast - that's been done before. Think outside the box, be creative and have some fun by trying something new this Mothering Sunday.
