Must-Have Stationery Items for Exam Season

The Importance of Having the Right Exam Equipment

GCSE and A level exam season is upon us! It is so important to make sure you have the right equipment - if you're missing essential items, you might not be able to fully complete all the questions, and if you have the wrong type of equipment, you might not be allowed to take it in to the exam hall.

Essential Exam Day Stationery Kit

  • Reliable Pens (Check Black or Blue): Carry multiple black ballpoint pens for exams, as blue is not accepted in some cases. Go for smooth-writing, smudge-free gel or ballpoint pens to keep your work neat. Have spares!
  • HB Pencils & Sharpener: Essential for drawing graphs, diagrams, or working through rough notes in maths and science exams.
  • Eraser: A good eraser is crucial for quick corrections.
  • Clear Ruler: A transparent ruler is often needed for diagrams.
  • Clear Pencil Case: Transparent pencil cases are mandatory.
  • Scientific Calculator: Ensure you have an approved, working model (check the batteries) for relevant exams.

Optional "Good-to-Have" Exam Items

  • Water Bottle: A clear, label-free bottle is typically allowed in the exam hall to keep you hydrated
  • A Few Sweets: Check the rules for your establishment, but my kids are allowed a couple of sweets wrapped in clear, text-free packaging, e.g. a few mints wrapped in cling film.

Revision and Study Stationery Essentials

  • Highlighters: Essential for identifying key points, dates, and terms in notes and textbooks.
  • Sticky Notes and Index Cards: Useful for creating flashcards and highlighting important information in textbooks.
  • Notepads/Refill Pads: A4 or A5 pads are versatile for rewriting notes, doing practice papers, and active recall exercises.
  • Study Planner/Academic Diary: Helps to map out revision sessions, manage time, and keep track of exam dates to reduce stress.
  • Whiteboard and Markers: Excellent for creating quick mind maps or practicing formulas that need to be memorized.

Optional "Good-to-Have" Study Items

  • Coloured Pens/Pencils: Ideal for creating visual notes and improving memory retention through colour coding.
  • Plastic Wallets/Document Organiser: Keeps revision handouts, past papers, and notes organized.

Top Tip: Check your stationery and, if necessary, prepare your clear pencil case the night before your exam to avoid last-minute stress
