What is Diwali?

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, or the Festival of Lights, is a celebration of the victory of light over dark, or good over evil. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists around the world, over 5 days each year.

Diwali is often celebrated with festive gatherings, fireworks, parties and Diwali decorations. It is common to share gifts, cards and positive messages with family and friends at Diwali, but knowing what to say can be tricky. That's where we come in!

Why is Diwali so late in 2026?

Diwali is never on a set date; it moves around a bit but usually falls between mid-October and mid-November. The reason for this is that it follows the Hindu lunar calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar which uses 12 solar months. One full lunar cycle (new moon to full moon and back to new moon again) is roughly 29.5 days, which is a smidge less than our 30-31 day calendar months.

Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day (when the moon is darkest) in the month of Kartik, and as the lunar months don't line up perfectly with the calendar months, it starts on a slightly different date each year. This year, an extra lunar month has been added to realign lunar and solar months.
