6 Beautiful Love Quotes for Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day! And, if that's not your thing, Happy Saturday to you!

Why We Celebrate Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day might feel like it’s all about roses, chocolates, and cute Instagram posts, but its history actually goes way back, long before heart-shaped emojis were a thing.

Many historians trace the origins of Valentine’s Day to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. This mid-February celebration marked the coming of spring and included a lottery where young men and women were paired together. Over time, the holiday was reshaped by the Catholic Church and connected to Saint Valentine, a priest who, according to legend, secretly performed marriages for couples when they were banned. He later became a symbol of love and devotion.

Fast forward to the Middle Ages, and Valentine’s Day started to become more romantic. Writers like Geoffrey Chaucer helped popularize the idea that February 14 was a special day for lovers. By the 18th century in England, it was common for people to exchange small love notes or handmade tokens of affection.

That tradition eventually turned into what we now know as Valentine’s cards. In the 19th century, advances in printing made it easier and cheaper to produce decorative cards. One of the early pioneers of commercial Valentine’s cards was Esther Howland, who helped make them widely popular in the United States.
