14 Letter Writing Ideas For World Letter Writing Day

Just For Fun Published Aug 30, 2024

In honour of World Letter Writing Day on the 1st September, we're talking about all things snail mail.

Letters are a brilliant way to connect, good for mental health and they make meaningful keepsakes, but it can be tricky to know what to write in a letter. Letters don't have to be long, fancy or perfect- that's actually the joy of letters- they are a perfectly imperfect, tangible thing, created by someone's hand, just for the recipient. I'm a BIG fan of letters, if you hadn't guessed. There's something quite magical about receiving a hand written letter.

We've created a list of 14 letter writing prompts and ideas to get you started.

  1. Words of encouragement- for tough times, share some words of encouragement and remind them of their strength.
  2. Appreciation post- tell the recipient how much you appreciate your friendship and why.
  3. Love Letter- Tell them how you feel. Be honest, authentic, informal. Say nice things about them.
  4. Send a postcard- just a brief hello and snapshot from a recent adventure.
  5. Write a haiku- a Japanese poetic form that consists of three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third.
  6. Share a joke
  7. Share good news- share your good news with the recipient
  8. Celebrate good news-offer your heartfelt congratulations on their good news.
  9. Thank you letter- thank someone for a gift, a memorable day, their help or support.
  10. Create a playlist- Just like a mix tape, but without the tape. Either write a list of songs you'd add to this playlist, or, better still, create it on your music streaming app of choice and share the link. More on this here.
  11. Share a favourite quote- something that has inspired you.
  12. Keeping them in the loop- share latest updates, news, changes in your life.
  13. Remember when... Reminisce about the good old days. Favourite memories, good times, funny things that happened back in the day.
  14. Send a card- Of course we had to include this one! You don't need an occasion to send a card. In fact, we've got a whole collection of "just because" cards
