In honour of World Letter Writing Day on the 1st September, we're talking about all things snail mail.
Letters are a brilliant way to connect, good for mental health and they make meaningful keepsakes, but it can be tricky to know what to write in a letter. Letters don't have to be long, fancy or perfect- that's actually the joy of letters- they are a perfectly imperfect, tangible thing, created by someone's hand, just for the recipient. I'm a BIG fan of letters, if you hadn't guessed. There's something quite magical about receiving a hand written letter.
We've created a list of 14 letter writing prompts and ideas to get you started.
- Words of encouragement- for tough times, share some words of encouragement and remind them of their strength.
- Appreciation post- tell the recipient how much you appreciate your friendship and why.
- Love Letter- Tell them how you feel. Be honest, authentic, informal. Say nice things about them.
- Send a postcard- just a brief hello and snapshot from a recent adventure.
- Write a haiku- a Japanese poetic form that consists of three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third.
- Share a joke
- Share good news- share your good news with the recipient
- Celebrate good news-offer your heartfelt congratulations on their good news.
- Thank you letter- thank someone for a gift, a memorable day, their help or support.
- Create a playlist- Just like a mix tape, but without the tape. Either write a list of songs you'd add to this playlist, or, better still, create it on your music streaming app of choice and share the link. More on this here.
- Share a favourite quote- something that has inspired you.
- Keeping them in the loop- share latest updates, news, changes in your life.
- Remember when... Reminisce about the good old days. Favourite memories, good times, funny things that happened back in the day.
- Send a card- Of course we had to include this one! You don't need an occasion to send a card. In fact, we've got a whole collection of "just because" cards
